Jargon buster: tech terms in plain English

Plain-English meanings for the tech words you'll see on BootApp, from Cloudflare Workers and D1 to DNS, HTTPS and two-factor login.

No jargon, no judgement. Here's what the words mean.

  • AI (artificial intelligence): software that can understand requests, write, plan and create. We use it to take on the jobs you don't want to do.
  • Analytics: counting visits to your site, which pages people read and where they came from.
  • Cloudflare: a company that runs a huge network of computers around the world. Your site runs on it, close to your visitors.
  • Cloudflare Worker: a small program that runs on Cloudflare's network and builds your site's pages. No server of your own needed.
  • D1: Cloudflare's database, where your site keeps its information (accounts, articles, messages).
  • Deploy: putting a change live on your website.
  • DNS: the internet's address book. It tells browsers where to find your domain.
  • Domain: your web address, such as bootapp.uk.
  • HTTPS: the padlock in your browser. It means the connection to the site is encrypted.
  • Rollback: putting the previous version of your site back if a change goes wrong.
  • Static assets: the files that don't change per visitor, such as styles, scripts and images.
  • Two-factor login (2FA): a second check when you log in, usually a 6-digit code from an app on your phone.
  • Wrangler: Cloudflare's command-line tool for building and deploying Workers.
